App Download, Start-Up, and Setup Questions

What should I do if the WiOn app fails to download?
Make sure your smartphone has an active Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G connection.

What should I do if the App fails to connect with the WiOn Wi-Fi Switch?
Make sure the WiOn Switch is plugged into an active power outlet and the power icon is on. Also check that your smartphone has an active Wi-Fi connection. The closer the WiOn Outlet is located to the Wi-Fi router during set-up, the better the signal strength will be for initial configuration.

What if I can’t get my outdoor WiOn switch to connect?
Bring the WiOn outdoor unit into the house. Do the set up process indoors and at an outlet near your router. Once set-up is complete, then unplug the WiOn device and take it outdoors for use. The closer the WiOn outlet is located to the Wi-Fi router during set-up, the better the signal strength will be for initial configuration.

I can’t find the WiOn App in the app store on my iPad?
When in the app store, in the upper left corner is a drop down that right now probably reads “iPad only” – if you select from the dropdown “iPhone” the WiOn app will appear.

WiOn Switch Connection Questions

The WiOn Switch does not appear on my smartphone’s Wi-Fi network list?
Check to see that the WiOn Switch is plugged into an active power supply and on the product the blue Wi-Fi status indicator light is blinking. If the WiOn Switch still does not appear on the smartphone Wi-Fi network list, please follow the instructions to reboot the WiOn Switch (here).

How do I reset my WiOn Switch? / How do I connect the WiOn Switch to a new router?
This depends on the type of WiOn Switch, follow the instructions below:

  1. Plug-in WiOn Switches: Unplug the WiOn Switch, then press and hold the power on/off button while plugging the WiOn Switch back into the power outlet. Continue holding the button for 3-5 seconds. When the Wi-Fi status indicator light turns off, release the button and the WiOn Switch has been reset. This will remove any settings and restore the WiOn Switch to the default setting.
  2. Hardwire WiOn Switches: Press and HOLD the power button at the same time that someone turns the breaker off to the switch. Leave the switch off for about 5 seconds. Make sure to still HOLD the power button down before you turn the breaker back on. Once power is restored and the blue light stops flashing entirely you can release the power button. Whichever type of device you have, you should then see an “ECO” network appear in your phone’s Wi-Fi network settings and you can re-install as if it were a brand new device.

I do not see my Wi-Fi router on the “Choose a Network” list?
If when returning to the WiOn app after selecting the ECO-XXXXX you don’t see your Wi-Fi router, tap the refresh button in the upper right corner. If you still don’t see your router, tap the add button and enter your router name. If after completing WiOn set-up, the app still does not display the switch, check that the Wi-Fi router is connected by selecting that router on the phone or tablet Wi-Fi settings. Then try again to connect the WiOn app. If still unsuccessful, try manually rebooting the WiOn Switch and being again.

Why is the wireless router indicated on the app different from the router selected during the initial connection process?
If the Smartphone has ever been connected to more than one Wi-Fi router, while those Wi-Fi signals are still available, the Smartphone will auto-connect to the nearest Wi-Fi router. This does not affect the app control and operation.

I can’t see all my WiOn Switches?
Try rotating the dial by dragging your finger along the green circle in the upper left corner of the app to see all connected WiOn Switches. It is recommended you set up only one WiOn Switch at a time. Check to see that all WiOn Switches are plugged into active power outlets, the app is properly installed, and you have an active Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G connection.

Is there problem my router?
The router plays the most important role in the range of connecting a WiOn device. A good quality router with the most current wireless technology will have better signal coverage and better performance. We suggest 802.11ac and 802.11N based router for home use (802.11b and 802.11g are older technology). With the advance of all smart technology, it’s important to consider updating old routers.

Another factor to consider is the location of the router and if there’s any signal blockage, such as metal beams in office buildings. The most common solution when there’s the concern of range is to set-up an outdoor unit indoors or near the router, and then move the unit back outside after set-up is complete.

An ideal set-up includes:

  • A good quality router with good setting location without signal blocking
  • >/= -80db Wi-Fi signal level (about two signal bars displayed on your smartphone)
  • Low noise, low EMI interference

Because every situation is different, distances between devices vary, and there are hundreds of wireless routers in the marketplace….the use a wireless range extender or a network repeater should be considered if the above options are exhausted.

You can add WiOn Switches in multiple locations, for example 5 at home and 3 at the office or lake house. And then control all devices from at home or on the go. Each WiOn device must be setup in the location of the Wi-Fi router that will control it. Again in the above example, the 5 connected at home need to be setup at home, and the 3 at the office need to be setup at the office. Note, in order control WiOn devices from other locations the WiOn device needs to be connected to the cloud, so you can use mobile internet (4G, 3G or LTE). It is possible to connect up to 12 WiOn Switches to the WiOn app.

Can WiOn Switches be controlled by more than one smartphone?
Yes. To add another user to the WiOn device go to their smartphone’s SETTINGS icon. Tap the Wi-Fi icon. Select the same router as used by the first smartphone (from the CHOOSE A NETWORK list). Exit smartphone SETTINGS and go into the WiOn app and begin control.
